GSE outlines tokenised securities strategy as Ghana tests digital investment models
The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) is actively exploring tokenization and other emerging technologies to modernize its investment issuance, trading, and settlement processes, aiming to enhance the country's capital market. Managing Director Abena Amoah disclosed this strategic initiative at the Africa Virtual Asset Summit (AVAS) 2026, emphasizing collaboration with regulators and technology partners to improve market access, operational efficiency, and investor confidence. This strategy extends beyond digital asset creation and trading to encompass the crucial clearing and settlement systems required post-transaction. Concurrently, Ghana's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a virtual asset sandbox, allowing 20 selected providers to conduct pilot projects under regulatory supervision, as outlined in an August 19 public notice. These pilots include AFRICOIN Ghana Limited testing gold tokenization, GFX Brokers Limited focusing on Treasury bill tokenization, One Africa Securities Limited exploring bonds, and WeWire Ghana Limited working on trade finance. The SEC's initiative is designed to generate evidence for developing future licensing and registration requirements, rather than providing general commercial authorization. This concerted effort by the GSE and SEC signifies a substantial move towards integrating blockchain-based solutions into Ghana's financial infrastructure, promising more efficient asset issuance, holding, and transfer for businesses and investors. The adoption of tokenization is crucial for Ghana to remain competitive and attract investment by leveraging technological advancements to streamline traditional financial operations, while maintaining robust investor protection and financial integrity.
