Tether Adds 3.7 Tons of Gold-Backed Assets: Tokenization Enters a New Phase

Tether Adds 3.7 Tons of Gold-Backed Assets: Tokenization Enters a New Phase

Tether has significantly expanded its gold-backed token supply by minting approximately 119,670 XAUT tokens, valued at nearly $497 million. This issuance represents the addition of roughly 3.7 metric tons of physical gold to the onchain ecosystem, reinforcing the growing integration of traditional commodities with blockchain infrastructure. Each XAUT token is designed to represent ownership of physical gold held in reserve, providing investors with a digital method to gain exposure to the safe-haven asset. The move follows reports that Tether Gold deposits in decentralized finance protocols have already surpassed $100 million, indicating that the asset is increasingly utilized beyond simple price exposure. By scaling its supply by nearly half a billion dollars, Tether is facilitating greater liquidity and accessibility for gold within onchain markets. This development serves as a prominent example of the broader shift toward tokenizing real-world assets, moving the concept from experimental to institutional-scale adoption. As demand for onchain commodities grows, such large-scale issuances are likely to become a standard feature of the evolving RWA landscape.

Tether’s XAUT Tokenized Gold Hits 79.3K Holders on BNB Chain

Tether's XAUT, a tokenized gold asset, has experienced a significant surge in adoption, reaching 79,300 holders on the BNB Chain. This figure represents a nearly 29-fold increase in the number of unique holders over the past three months. The growth highlights a broader market trend where investors are increasingly seeking exposure to tangible commodities through blockchain-based assets. While the surge in holder count suggests strong interest, overall trading volume for the asset remains relatively low, indicating a cautious "wait-and-see" approach among market participants. This development underscores the evolving role of stable, backed digital assets within the cryptocurrency ecosystem as investors look to diversify portfolios. The rapid expansion of XAUT on the BNB Chain serves as a barometer for the growing demand for real-world asset tokenization. As Tether continues to expand its product suite beyond traditional stablecoins, the performance of XAUT provides critical insights into how institutional and retail investors perceive commodity-linked tokens during periods of market volatility.

Tether Rejected This MiCA Rule. Now the ECB Wants It Gone

The European System of Central Banks (ESCB) has formally requested that the European Commission amend the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation to remove the mandatory 60% bank-deposit reserve requirement for significant stablecoin issuers. Central banks argue that stablecoin reserves are inherently volatile and could trigger liquidity crises for commercial lenders if large-scale redemptions occur. This regulatory hurdle previously led Tether to decline pursuing an EU stablecoin license, as CEO Paolo Ardoino contended that holding reserves in commercial banks introduces unnecessary counterparty risk. The ESCB now proposes that issuers instead hold reserves in highly liquid assets maturing within one to five working days. This development highlights a fundamental tension between protecting the banking system from crypto-asset volatility and ensuring stablecoin issuers can maintain safe, liquid backing. As the consultation period concludes on September 30, the outcome will determine whether major issuers like Tether reconsider their European market strategy. The current rules remain in effect until formal legislative amendments are passed by EU lawmakers.
