Re Protocol Tops $375M in Deposits as Tokenized Reinsurance Gains Ground
Re Protocol has reached over $375 million in deposits and distributed $12 million in earnings as of October 2026, marking its position as the largest on-chain reinsurance platform. The protocol tokenizes reinsurance contracts through two stablecoin-based products, reUSD and reUSDe, which offer varying liquidity and risk profiles by tapping into the $760 billion global reinsurance market. By diversifying DeFi yields away from traditional U.S. Treasury bills and crypto lending, Re provides returns generated through underwriting activities rather than interest rate fluctuations. The platform utilizes a tiered capital structure where Re absorbs initial losses, followed by the mezzanine reUSDe tranche and the senior reUSD tranche. Significant integration into DeFi protocols like Kamino, Jupiter Lend, Morpho, and Pendle has expanded the utility of reUSD, though these connections introduce external risks such as cascading liquidations. A recent incident on Morpho involving PT-reUSD demonstrated the volatility inherent in leveraged DeFi strategies despite the stability of the underlying reinsurance contracts. Ultimately, Re aims to bridge traditional insurance capital with digital markets, though its long-term success depends on managing underwriting performance and the systemic risks of its DeFi ecosystem.
