HSBC launches RedCoin stablecoin, plans HK$100 tokenized fund investments
HSBC has initiated the rollout of its Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin, RedCoin, to over 3.3 million users of its PayMe retail payment platform. The phased launch allows users to conduct peer-to-peer transfers and merchant payments using the token, which is redeemable one-for-one for Hong Kong dollars. Operating on HSBC’s private distributed ledger, the stablecoin is currently backed by cash reserves totaling HK$81.58 million against a circulation of HK$80.58 million. This development marks a significant step in integrating regulated digital currencies into mainstream consumer finance within Hong Kong. By leveraging its existing PayMe infrastructure, HSBC aims to provide a seamless payment experience without requiring new bank accounts or minimum balances. The bank plans to expand its digital asset offerings later this year to include tokenized gold and third-party investment funds. This move highlights the growing institutional adoption of distributed ledger technology for settlement efficiency and retail payment modernization. The initiative follows HSBC’s licensing under the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Stablecoins Ordinance, positioning the bank as a key player in the region's evolving digital asset landscape.
