Hong Kong Completes Its First Cross-Bank Tokenized Gold Transaction — What Really Changes?

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority's (HKMA) Ensemble Project has successfully completed the first cross-bank transaction involving tokenized gold and tokenized deposits. This milestone utilized the Anvita TaaS platform by Ant Digital Technologies, with Zhaojin Mining, CCB (Asia), and the Bank of East Asia participating in the pilot. By integrating the asset layer and the money layer into a single settlement loop, the project eliminated the need for traditional T+2 manual reconciliation. The transaction utilized tokenized deposits linked to the HKD Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system rather than private stablecoins, ensuring regulatory compliance and interbank-grade finality. This architecture allows for near-instant settlement, with tests demonstrating a reduction in gold transaction settlement times to five minutes. The HKMA has now expanded the Ensemble project to include 12 participating banks and 20 industry pioneers, supporting 24/7 settlement via tokenized central bank money. This development marks a shift from merely creating digital shadows of assets to achieving simultaneous, final delivery-versus-payment settlement within a regulated framework.
