Harneys, dropRWA plan tokenized cat bonds for uninsured disaster risks
Harneys and dropRWA have announced plans to launch tokenized catastrophe bonds in early 2025 to address the significant gap in global disaster insurance coverage. By leveraging blockchain technology, the initiative aims to provide investors with direct legal ownership of underlying bonds, effectively democratizing access to an asset class traditionally reserved for large institutions. The catastrophe bond market currently holds $65.6 billion in outstanding value, with a record $11.3 billion in new issuance recorded in the second quarter of 2024. This tokenized structure specifically targets hard-to-insure risks such as floods, typhoons, and wildfires, particularly in regions like Southeast Asia where data limitations often hinder conventional reinsurance. By lowering the minimum investment threshold below the standard $250,000, the firms intend to attract a broader range of capital to support climate-related risk mitigation. The project emphasizes strict adherence to securities and insurance regulations to ensure investor protection while maintaining the integrity of the disaster coverage market. This development represents a significant step in integrating decentralized finance with the global insurance-linked securities sector to solve complex, real-world protection gaps.
