Hong Kong’s 24/7 RWA Market Has a Weekend Problem
ChinaAMC has launched secondary trading for its tokenized Hong Kong dollar and US dollar money market funds on the PantherTrade platform, enabling 24/7 market access for investors. While this innovation allows for continuous trading, the lack of a redemption anchor to the fund's net asset value (NAV) during weekends creates significant price divergence risks. Because the underlying fund redemptions only process on business days, market makers are tasked with maintaining liquidity, though ChinaAMC only commits to 'best endeavours' to provide quotes. Furthermore, the tokens represent a beneficial interest held in an omnibus wallet rather than direct ownership on the official fund register, introducing counterparty risk if PantherTrade faces insolvency. Trading is further constrained by a 4% price band guardrail and high taker fees of 0.29%, which can erode a significant portion of annual yields. Investors must also navigate a settlement gap where platform cash is available instantly, but bank withdrawals remain restricted to Hong Kong business hours. This development highlights the ongoing friction between the instant nature of blockchain-based secondary markets and the traditional settlement cycles of underlying regulated financial products. Ultimately, the market serves those needing internal platform liquidity, while traditional redemption remains the superior option for those seeking NAV-based pricing.
