ECB to launch tokenized deposits, securities workstreams as Appia takes shape
The Eurosystem is advancing its Appia Roadmap by transitioning from consultation to active construction of a tokenized financial ecosystem. The European Central Bank has identified three priority workstreams focusing on tokenized deposits, tokenized securities, and shared network governance. These initiatives aim to address critical infrastructure gaps, including the current lack of a unified pan-European legal definition for tokenized deposits. Executive Board member Piero Cipollone emphasized the risk of market fragmentation if national regulations continue to diverge across the region. Central banks are simultaneously developing on-chain central bank money and collateral mobilization to support future market experimentation. Existing solutions like Pontes are undergoing upgrades to move beyond rudimentary settlement features toward a more robust framework. The Eurosystem plans to conduct cross-cutting testing in 2027, with a final production-ready blueprint targeted for 2028. This strategic shift signals a major institutional commitment to standardizing digital asset infrastructure across the European Union.
