Brazil's largest lender Itaú is stepping deeper into the tokenization

    CoinDesk·3 min readAugust 11, 2026
    Infrastructure

Itaú Unibanco, the largest lender in Latin America with over $562 billion in assets, has partnered with infrastructure provider OpenAssets to launch a new tokenization pilot. Facilitated by the Brazilian Financial and Capital Markets Association (ANBIMA), the project aims to test the issuance, trading, and settlement of fixed-income securities and investment funds on distributed-ledger technology. This initiative seeks to establish the necessary technical standards and regulatory frameworks for institutional adoption of blockchain-based financial systems. Brazil has rapidly become a global hub for RWA tokenization, with recent projects ranging from debt securitization on the XDC Network to the tokenization of agricultural assets like dairy cows. Itaú’s participation builds upon its previous experience with the Brazilian central bank’s Drex pilot, which explored tokenized money and asset transactions. As major financial institutions globally move toward blockchain rails, this pilot underscores the transition from experimental exploration to production-ready infrastructure. The collaboration highlights the growing integration of traditional banking with digital asset technology to improve market efficiency.
