The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has expanded its Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) register by adding 12 newly authorized crypto-asset service providers (CASPs), bringing the total count to 321. This fourth post-deadline update includes diverse financial institutions such as three German cooperative banks, two Spanish fintech firms, and four French entities. Simultaneously, ESMA updated its non-compliant entities register by adding three firms flagged by Italy’s CONSOB, raising the total number of flagged entities to 167. While the number of authorized e-money token issuers remains stable at 41, the absence of any listed asset-referenced token issuers highlights the ongoing regulatory maturation process within the European Union. These updates are critical for the RWA market as they establish the formal compliance framework necessary for institutional participation in tokenized assets. By standardizing the operational requirements for service providers, MiCA provides the legal certainty required for traditional financial institutions to integrate blockchain-based assets into their offerings. This regulatory clarity is a foundational step toward the broader adoption of tokenized securities and real-world assets across the European financial landscape.
MiCA is the European Union's comprehensive regulatory framework designed to govern crypto-assets, service providers, and issuers. It aims to provide legal certainty, protect investors, and ensure market integrity by establishing uniform rules across all EU member states. The regulation categorizes digital assets into specific types, such as e-money tokens and asset-referenced tokens, each subject to distinct compliance and licensing requirements.
